If you had, lets say, 2.73's, you'd have a 2 series carrier. The mounting flange for the ring gear is further away from the pinion center-line; due to the size of the pinion gear. In a 3 series carrier, the flange on the differential/carrier is moved closer to the pinion since the pinion isn't as large as the ratio gets numerically higher.
