Facebook and Twitter are both forms of social networking. Facebook was very popular for college students and is now popular for many age groups. Facebook allows you to develop a network of friends where you can share your thoughts, notes, pictures, videos, etc. Facebook also has many applications that you can use to do various things, including keep up with your friends birthdays, send birthday cards, complete quizzes and play games.
Twitter can interface with Facebook, but it uses a 140 character limit message function, called a "tweet". Twitter users follow other Twitter users and receive their "tweets". Twitter users can use applications or browser add-ons to send and receive tweets.

Twitter restricts you to 140 characters and is more for giving out short messages.
Facebook is for reconnecting with people. It has chat clients, better posts, and is much different. They are hard to compare. I have both, they are very different.
