What animals apart from hamsters can be kept in a hamster cage and are Syrian or dwarf hamsters better?

Syrian hamsters are the largest of the hamsters. Keep that in mind when purchasing the cage be it plastic,wire or glass. All other small animals such as mice and geribils may fit in a hamster cage .It really depends on the type of cage you have and are planning to buy.

∙ 14y agoThey are specifically designed for either a large breed (i.e. Syrian hamster) or a small breed (i.e. Campbell Dwarf hamster). Large breeds will not be able to move around comfortably in a cage designed for smaller hamsters.

∙ 14y agoyes but it is unlikely. hamsters can be cannibals. my hamster had a sister but she killed her and ate her. most hamsters are nice though. but if a dwarf hamster was dead then the syrian hamster would likely eat it

∙ 13y agodon't put dwarf hamsters into Syrian cages when you first bring them home or they may escape because they are so small.
after at-least 1 year you can usually put them into Syrian cages then but keep an eye on them in the first 48 hours of being in a Syrian cage (includes night time that's when they are mostly active)

Teddy bear hamster is another name for a syrian hamster. Syrian hamsters are very territorial and are the only type of hamster which needs to live alone. If put with another the chances are they will fight. If you wish to keep hamsters in pairs it is better to buy Russians or Chinese hamsters which are more compatible.

I have read that a female hamster's hormones kick in every couple of days. This makes them very mean weekly. If I were you I would go with a male. You are much safer on getting a nicer hamster if you get a male. I would recommend a Syrian hamster. They are the nicest of all the hamster breeds. DO NOT keep them in the same cage. Syrian hamsters DO NOT get along with their own breed!!

I wouldn't suggest doing that. Syrian hamsters do better by themselves, and don't like other's company. You can try it, and see what happens. But I wouldn't do that.

there is a big difference between them as syrian hamsters are bigger than dwarf hamsters. There is quite a lot of different types of dwarf hamsters such as, Russian winter whites, Chinese, campbells, rovoroski and maybe more. But most dwarf hamsters can live with 1 or more of the same sex and syrians have to live alone - so if your hamster lives alone then its probably a syrian. aslo syrians are about half the size of a guineapig and dwarf hamsters are about half the size of a syrian hamster.
