A bong is generally for one person. It is usually vase like with a bowl attacked to the larger lower portion. the smoker packs a bowl, applies fire directly to the desired smoking herb, and draws the smoke into the bong by inhaling from the narrower top portion of the "vase". the shaft, or stem of the bowl, goes directly into water providing a cooling/filtering effect for the smoke that is drawn through.
a hookah on the otherhad is more like a vase with tubes coming out of it. instead of having the bowl attached to the larger lower portion of the vase it is placed into smaller opening on top. Sheesha, or cured tobacco, is then vaporized by applying heat, through conduction with a piece of charcoal underneath the bowl.
the smoke is pulled through the water by a mouth tube attached bellow the bowl.
