The Cozumel Fox is thought to be a dwarf form of the "traditional" Gray Fox, a little like the Island (Gray) Fox found in the Channel Islands of California.
It is believed to be a divergent species since it has been isolated on Cozumel for many thousands of years, again, similar to the Island Fox, but on a different island, so it evolved differently.
According to an article by Gompper, M. E.; Petrites, A. E. & Lyman in the Journal of zoology in 2006, "Archeological evidence indicates that a dwarf fox (Urocyon sp.) has inhabited Cozumel Island, Mexico at least since the arrival of Mayan peoples, but no taxonomic descriptions or morphological assessments of the animal exist. A recent field study indicates that this fox is on the verge of extinction and therefore it is critical to describe the population."
