Salamanders are the only group with a fully developed tail. All frogs lack a tail without exception. The frogs do develop a tail in the larval stage but it gets lost after metamorfosis.

There is a third group of amfibians: the Gymnophiona or caecilians . These generally have a shorter tail, soms species lach a tail. All caecilians are worm-like wether they have a tal or not. The presence of a tail in this group is only visible on the underside. In tailless species, the cloaca is at the end of the body, in tailcarrying species it is more to the middle.

Frogs have smooth, wet skin. Toads have dry, warty skin, and often no teeth as they eat worms and other soft thing. Salamanders have smooth, wet skin again, but their long tails make them easily recognizable.
