It's quite simple, really. A piston engine utilizes the linear motion of cylinders/pistons to combust the gasoline that drives the vehicle or appliance. A jet engine, however, uses a fluid (air) intake to assist in the compression of fuel. It comprises of many turbines and compression components that synchronize to force the expended fuel out the nozzle of the engine. This action creates direct thrust as opposed to the electrical energy produced in a piston engine.

The steam engineer is concerned only on the steam generated by either boiler or any steam generating device and the way it should be manipulate for maximun productivity and efficiency while, piston engineer is responsible for designing pistons with low frictionand low thermal conductivity for compressors, compress ignation and spark ignation engines.

Not certain what the first answer is trying to say, but the conventional steam-engine IS a piston engine. It is double-acting, meaning the steam acts on each side alternately of a piston in a cylinder; whereas most internal-combustion engines are single-acting,

Steam turbines rotate one direction around a shaft. Reciprocating engines move one direction- stop- and reverse direction- and stop again before repeating the cycle. The energy expended in reversing the direction of the piston makes the engine less efficient.
