They are both basically the same thing. A natural elevation in the earth's surface. The only difference is, is that a mountain is bigger.

Until the 1970s the difference was a 1000 foot difference in local elevation. Since their is no way to standardize, this distinction is no longer used.

Unfortunately, there is no universally accepted standard definition for the height of a mountain or a hill although a mountain usually has an identifiable summit. In the United Kingdom, a mountain must be over 600 meters or 300 meters if it's an abrupt difference in the local topography. However, some hills can be called mountains and some mountains can be called hills--it's just a matter of the original name given to the relief.

There is no global definition of a mountain or hill, they will vary with local terminology, however generally the difference is height; a mountain will be generally bigger than a hill.

In Europe the definition of a mountain is a peak of greater than 1,000m, however there are some peaks with the name mountain below this height

Mountain - Mountains are made of rock and are very, very tall.

Hill - Hills are made of dirt and grass and are smaller than hills.

Don't get this mixed up! - Mountains can have trees on them. They may not be fully made of rock. Somewhere in heights are the line drawn from being a mountain or a hill. Anyway, some mountains are covered in trees and look like huge hills.
