A Fixed hard disc is used to store operating system and not for storing applications which we needs portability. Also it stores any application which requires very fast access to data for both reading and writing.
On the other hand, a portable hard disc is used to store very large files which need transporting from one computer to another .
EDIT: This is completely wrong! A fixed hard disc can be used for the OS, yes, but applications can also be stored on there. A portable drive will usually have work files on so you can access them while out of the house.
well...the answer lies in whether or not they are convenient to move from point a to point b. Literally speaking, ALL storage devices are portable. From a practical point of view, however, it is portable if it is easy to disconnect/reconnect and it is non-portable if it requires turning screws.
Floppy disk may be of any type is always portable, however the floppy disk "drives" are fixed.
Fixed disk
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PERMANENT HARD DISK DRIVE AND A REMOVABLE HARD DISK DRIVE A permanent drive is in housed in the system while the removable one is externally fixed. Basically they perform the same functions.
The difference between a drive and disk is that a drive is used to read a disk whether it be a floppy disk or a compact disk.
The term 'portable disk' refers to portable memory for a computer that is in the shape of a disk, such as a CD, DVD, or floppy disk. (On a floppy disk the disk part is on the inside)
The best example of fixed storage in a computer is the hard disk. A frequent example of removal storage is a thumb drive / USB stick.
The main difference is size and speed, and do not forget prize. In addition, the fact that external disks are connected to the computer at all time may cause the disk to be infected. Therefore, I would recommend you to use a portable disk, and do a backup once a week or month.

what is the defference between cassette tape and hard disk
fixed head :-one read / write head per track-heads mounted on fixed ridged arm-No drop protectionmovable head :-one read / write head per side-mounted on a movable arm-if dropped the heads can be retracted to prevent damage to the hard drive.
The hard disk is the device that stores the folders.
A portable hard drive is both of the following:a hard disk drive that is small enough to carry (portable)a hard disk drive that is external to a computer
