The difference is Americans are pure. Regular QHs were bred with mares/stallys from Europe.

The only thing diffrent about them is how they are registered. Quarters and American Quarters are pretty much the same except that the bloodlines are traceable further back on American history.

A mustang has low withers, a low headset, very round barrel and stocky conformation. They usually have small round eyes, a long neck and a wide face.

A quarter horse can be all kinds of sizes and colors, but they are muscular and stocky and have thick legs, hind quarters, fore arms, and neck. They usually have a very big face, and round big eyes. But most distinctive feature is the stocky, thick, muscular body.
