A stallion is a male horse that has not been gelded.

A gelding is a male horse that has been gelded. The difference is the surgery that removes the testicles of the male horse. A stallion is one that has not had the surgery and the gelding is one that has had the surgery. Occationally the surgery alone is not enough to remove the stallion like behaviors from the horse, which are primarily driven from hormones. Under rare circumstances a third testicle can be up near the prostate, and an additional surgery will be required to remove that testice to make the stallion completely sterile and a "gelding".

Stallions are usually larger because their bones are structured differently than a mare's. Stallions also develop a bit more muscle because of testerone, which makes the "crestiness" of a stallion's neck.

Not necessarily, in certain breeds the registries set a height limit for mare, which tends to be a few inches shorter than the stallions height limits. However in just about all breeds of horse mares can be taller or even heavier than a stallion., they just might not fall within the registries standards. However as a general rule a stallion that is the same height as a mare might be a bit bulkier/ heavier than the mare due to muscle development.
