War is armed conflict against an enemy; a battle is hostile conflict in the course of war. There's no defined time limit for war.

AND War is a term that applies to military conflict between two or more countries which transpire over months or years.

Battle is a term that applies to a localized military conflict between two enemy armies or smaller military units that occur on 1 or more days.

A War usually lasts more than a year and includes several battles and has the objective of capturing a country or either ending the conflict. A Battle is usually only a day or two and its objective is to capture a position such as town or a hill. There were several battles in WW2 that lasted longer than a few days or even a week: example Battle of Britian, Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Iwo Jima. A better term for these long periods of combat would be a "campaign".

A war is a prolonged conflict involving multiple battles, often fought between nations or groups. A battle is a specific engagement within a war, typically involving direct combat between military forces.
