What is the difference between adderral and Vyvanse?

Vyvanse is a new drug on the market which only recently got FDA approval. Up until the point where it gets FDA approval the drug cannot be sold and so no money is being made on it. That means that the initial research costs, which often times can be huge, need to be made back before the drug can drop in price. This is why often times drugs are more expensive when they are new and then you will see a gradual drop in price as the drug becomes older and the company starts to make a profit as opposed to paying research expenses.

Adderall is a combination of amphetamine salts(~75% Dextroamphetamine and ~25% Levoamphetamine). Vyvanse is a pro-drug called Lisdexamphetamine dimesylate (Dextroamphetamine coupled with Lysine molecule for longer lasting effects as well as to diminish abuse potential)

Adderall and Vyvanse are both Schedule II Controlled Substances, becuase of the active ingredient Dextroamphetamine, despite the lowered abuse potential of Vyvanse.

Adderall IR effects last 4-6 hours, dependent on the dose.

Adderall XR effects last from 9 to 12 hours.

Vyvanse effects last from 6-13 hours.

Vyvanse is, IMHO, shockingly expensive. It does work quite well, however. (I dislike Adderall, and extended release formulations never work well for me - Vyvanse is an exception.) Dexedrine still works better, for me.

30 capsules, 20mg (20mg of Vyvanse is almost none), lists at about $200 (Walgreens). 60mg capsules cost about twice that.

The active ingredient in Vyvans is released in the body over time instead of all at once. It's a time-released version of Adderall.
