All wheel drive is more of an "always on" system. User friendly and nothing needs to be changed by the driver. Most would consider this a more sophisticated system found in luxury cars such as Lexus, BMW, etc. 4 wheel drive is what you would find in trucks and some SUVs. Older models would have a selector lever on the floor and a transfer case* to switch from 2wd, 4wd, neutral, or "low lock" which changes the overall gear ratio and is used for pulling at low speeds. Others and most today have gone to electronic, so they have buttons on the dash instead of the lever on the floor. *transfer case is a device that is mounted to the rear of the transmission and is about the same size. It changes the single output transmission (one driveshaft going to the rear axle/wheels) to a dual output so there is now a second driveshaft for the front axle/wheels. Hence 4 wheel drive. All in all both systems are producing the same goal. To be able to turn all wheels for added traction, performance, stability, etc.
