Although whales and kangaroos are both mammals, there are numerous differences between them.

  • Whales live in the sea and kangaroos live on land
  • Kangaroos are marsupials and have pouches, while whales are placental mammals and do not have pouches
  • Kangaroos can only be found in Australia (and tree kangaroos are also found in New Guinea) but whales are common in many countries and international waters, like the Southern Ocean
  • Female kangaroos, like other marsupials, have two vaginas, or what are called paired lateral vaginae. These are for the purpose of transporting the sperm to the womb, but there is a midline pseudovaginal canal for actually giving birth. As well as two vaginas and two uteruses, female marsupials have two fallopian tubes and two cervixes. Whales do not.
  • Kangaroos have four limbs and a tail. Whales have fins and a tail.
  • Kangaroos have fur, but whales have skin.

Obvious differences between bats and kangaroos include:

  • Although both species are mammals, bats are placental mammals, and kangaroos are marsupials.
  • Bats are the only mammals capable of independent flight; kangaroos do not fly.
  • Bats are much smaller than almost all species of kangaroo.
  • Most bats are either insectivorous or fructivorous (fruit-eating) while kangaroos mostly feed on grasses, vegetation and grains. There is a small number of omnivorous kangaroo species, and these will eat insects.
  • Bat species are found on all continents except for the Antarctic. Kangaroos are found only on the continent of Australia (and the nearby island of New Guinea).

Tree kangaroos are kangaroos - just a few of over 60 species of kangaroo. However, differences between tree kangaroos and the animal most commonly thought of as kangaroos (Red kangaroos and Grey kangaroos) are:Tree kangaroos are indeed arboreal-dwelling, spending much of their time feeding and resting in trees. Red and grey kangaroos are strictly ground-dwelling, and cannot climb at all.Tree kangaroos are smaller and stockier, and certainly more agile. They have stronger front legs to assist with climbing, and longer tails to help with balance.Tree kangaroos eat leaves and fruit. Red and Grey kangaroos do not readily eat fruit in their native habitat.

The main difference between a kangaroo and a wallaroo is size. Wallaroos are in between the size of kangaroos and wallabies - hence their name - and are stockier and more thickset.
