To breathe in your chest expands, creating a vacuum and thus drawing new air in. The new air contains a lot of oxygen (20%). To breathe out the chest contracts , forcing out the used air from which some of the oxygen has been removed and been replaced by carbon dioxide.

to breath in, you use a large plate shaped muscle called your diaphragm that lies underneath your lungs around the bottom of your rib cage. your diaphragm tenses and pulls downward causing air to be pulled into your lungs. also when you breath in your rib muscles flex to expand your rib cage and this helps pull air into your lungs as well.

when you breath out, you simply relax your diaphragm and it returns to its resting position which pushes air out of your lungs. you can also force air out of your lungs rapidly by using another set of muscles in your ribs that pull your ribs inwards and pushes air outwards.
