For Sodium Lignosulfonate:

Produced by treatment with sodium sulfite;

Used in industrial and food industry processes;

pH is adjusted for specific uses. The production slurry usually has a pH of less than 2

For Calcium Lignosulfonate:

Produced by treatment with Calcium sulfite and calcium hydroxide;

Used in industial processes

pH is adjusted for specific uses. The production slurry usually has a pH of 8 to 10

More Information:

Each of these characteristic substances is actually a series of substances of irregular structure, one sodium based, the other calcium based, with a range of molecular weights from about 10,000 to 100,000, and are most often are used as a single based mixture. Adding confusion is the fact that they're manufactured, marketed and sold under a variety of trade names.

There are some similarities in the two mixtures and for some purposes they can be interchanged. However, they are each chemically distinct, even as a series, and they differ across their range of chemical and physical properties. Because of these differences in properties, and depending upon the requirements of each application, one is more suitable for certain purposes than the other.
