Colon is divided into several distinct regions, ascending colon, right colic flexure, transverse colon, left colic flexure, descending colon, sigmoid colon. The Colon is part of the large intestine.

Large intestine is connected to small intestine through ileocecal valve and is about 5 feet long. It ends at the anus, encircles small intestine on 3 sides and has subdivisions called the cecum, vermiform, appendix, colon, rectum, anal canal.
There is no difference between the colon and large intestine. Colon is just another word for large intestine.
Actually: The colon is the largest part of the large intestine, there is a descending, transverse, and ascending colon, right and left colic flexure, as well as the sigmoid colon, these are all parts of the colon.

However the colon is not the only part of the large intestine, there are also the cecum, vermiform appendix, rectum, and anal canal.

Therefore the colon carries it towards the rectum, but the rectum is not part of the colon.

In a sense, they are one and the same. The large intestine is the collective term. It is made up of the cecum, the COLON (ascending, transverse, descending & sigmoid colons) and the rectum.
