A description provides a verbal or written "picture", if you will, of a thing, place or problem, etc. in enough detail so you can mentally visualize it.
Whereas an explanation strives to resolve a problem or define something in enough detail to satisfy an inquiry.
A description would identify a problem, an explanation would define it's resolution.
