A germ cell is a cell that gives rise to gametes of an organism that reproduces sexually. In many animals, the germ cells originate near the gut of an embryo and migrate to the developing gonads. The only cells of the human body not produce by mitosis are the gametes, which develop in the gonads- ovaries in females and testes in males. Gametes are formed by a variation of cell division called meiosis, which yields nonidentical daughter cells that only have one set of chromosomes.

Gametes contain a single chromosome set and has a haploid number of chromosomes (n).

A somatic cell-any cell other than a gamete- in a multi-cellular organism has a diploid number of chromosomes (2n). We inherit one chromosome of each pair from each parent. The word "somatic" is derived from the Greek word sōma, meaning "body". Somatic cells make up all the internal organs, skin, bones, blood, and connective tissue. Mitosis and cytokinesis produced somatic cells that make up the body, and the same processes continue to generate new cells to replace dead and damage ones.

Somatic cells are the cells that make up the body

Ex. Liver cells, skin cells, nerve cells, epithelial cells

somatic cells undergo mitosis. here, they contain the whole number of chromosomes of an individual.

germ cells on the other hand are the cells primarily functioning for reproduction.

Ex. Sperm Cells and Egg Cells (they are the only examples)

germ cells undergo meiosis. here, halving of the chromosomal number happens.

Somatic cells are all body cells of an organism. Examples include internal organs, skin, bone, blood, and connective tissue. These cells have a complete set of 46 chromosomes (23 from mother and 23 from father). Sperm as well as ova, also known as germ cells, only have one half of the parent's chromosomes (sperm-23, ova-23). During conception the two gametes, sperm and ova, unite forming a zygote containing 46 chromosomes.

Germ cells are technically germline cells or "gametes." They are the cells of the sexual, reproductive system (the spermatozoa and ova). The somatic cells are all the other cells in the body.

Somatic: diploid (full set of DNA); all cells except sex cells; produced via mitosis

Gamete: haploid (half set of DNA; these are sex cells (egg or sperm); produced via meiosis

Human cell containing 22 autosomes and a Y chromosome?

A normal human cell containing 44 autosomes and two X chromosomes is a somatic cell of a female. The word "somatic" comes from the Greek word "soma" which means body.

Is sperm a somatic cell?

No. Every cell is a somatic cell except for the reproductive cells (the egg and sperm). They are gametes.

Is a hepatocyte a somatic cell?

Yes, a hepatocyte is a somatic cell. All the cells in the body, except for sex cells (sperm and ovum/egg), are somatic cells.

How many chromosomes have non somatic cell?

Except in the egg and sperm, all cells are somatic cells and have the normal number of chromosomes.

What is somatic cells?

The word "somatic" is derived from the Greek word soma, meaning "body". Hence, all body cells of an organism - apart from the sperm and egg cells, the cells from which they arise (gametocytes) and undifferentiated stem cells - are somatic cells.

What phase of the cell cycle is the somatic cell?

A somatic cell is any cell in the body or a plant and can therefore do anything, depending on where it is located. e.g. a muscle cell in an arm muscle contracts, an eye cell detects light etc. The only cells which are not somatic are the sex cells such as sperm, eggs (animals), pollen and ovum (plants).

What is somatic mutations?

A mutation in a non-germline cell (germline cells are sperm, egg, etc.).

How many gonosomes are present in the mouse sperm?

how many gonosomes are in the mouse somatic cell

Define somatic cells?

The definition of somatic cells is any cell, with the exception of reproductive cells of eggs and sperm, in a living organism. Somatic cells are diploid cells that compose the organs and tissues.

What is another word for sperm?

gamete cell (eggs are gametes too)germ cells (so are egg cells)"little swimmers"seedsemen (actually semen contains sperm)

What is somatic variation?

Mutations that occur in the somatic cells are called somatic variations .New mutations occur twice as frequently in sperm as in eggs(germ cells), probably because so many more cell divisions are required to make sperm than eggs.
