A gate valve raises and lowers a flat piece of metal, usually brass across the opening of the line it is in. A globe valve has a round ball in it with a hole through it. When open, the hole is in line with the line it is in. When closed, the hole is across the line blocking it.

Actually

A globe valve is used for throttling and is not considered a positive shut off.

A gate valve is designed to be either fully open then a 1/4 turn back (to prevent the stem from seizing ) Or fully closed

This is the reason a globe pattern type is used for taps, ,bibs, faucets, and shower body's

Also a globe valve offers the most resistance (friction).

One different advantage of a globe is it ability to balance where high pressure is a concern such as a BY - PASS on a fire stand pipe system or high pressure steam applications 125 #
