Lay ministry is a ministry of all Christians. This could include reading in Church, praying for others, visiting the sick, and, if accredited as a lay minister, leading some kinds of worship - but not Eucharistic worship.

Ordination is the 'setting aside' by God for a special purpose. You represent the Church, and, by orders of Priesthood carry the authority of the priesthood over the centuries, in having the authority to confer God's absolution and blessing and to preside at the Eucharist (mass).

Roman Catholic AnswerThe ordained ministry is for men who have received a call from God to that ministry. Their ordination sets them apart for God's work and places heavy responsibilities on them. Lay ministry is for every baptized Christian and involves living AND spreading the faith, or as St. Francis said, "preach the Gospel AT ALL TIMES, if necessary, use words. In other words, your Christianity should be obvious in the choices you make in your life and how you do them. And your happiness should permeate your whole life.

What is the difference between an Ordained Pastor and a Licensed Pastor?

An ordained minister has been examined by a congregation and found to be orthodox in his beliefs. Then, those that have interviewed him certify or vouch for his orthodoxy and lay hands on him and prayer for his ministry. They then sign a paper stating that he is ordained by that group. To be licensed is to have the state's registration. It includes what affiliation the minister claims. There is not an examination of orthodoxy. Ministers are allowed to perform certain actions such as marriage with the state license.
