Aftermarket parts are usually designed by companies to be less expensive or to outperform original equipment manufacturers ( OEM ) parts. Generally you can tell wich is the case by the price. It is possible to order OEM parts through NAPA and other parts stores. Brands like Bosch, TRW, Hella etc can be purchased for significantly less than a BMW dealership will charge. NAPA ( and other parts outlets ) may have listed in their parts catalogue wich parts are OEM. Most BMW mechanics will recommend OEM parts because they will have had experience with cheaper brands wich failed to perform sufficiently or as long as should be expected.
As I say, always go for factory parts because they can be more reliable, but if you can't afford them or they aren't available then getting aftermarket parts are a good idea. But they are also a good idea for a short time because they are used.
