Fiction and Non-fiction are genre types for books.
Fiction books are books that aren't actually true. For example, fairy or folk tales, realistic fiction, mysteries, romances, fantasies, and other books that talk about things that have not actually happened are fiction.
Non-fiction books are books based on facts. These don't usually have plots. Non-fiction books are biographies, autobiographies, books that inform, (like an Encyclopedia) books based on fact, and essays.

Non-fiction is one of the two main divisions in writing, particularly used in libraries, the other being fiction. However, non-fiction need not be written text necessarily, since pictures and film can also purport to present a factual account of a subject.
