Basically the north had societies with slaves and the south had slave societies. The differing opinions of slavery largely derived from different paths development in each economy. The North was largely a developing industrial society, with the industrial and market revolutions taking place during this time period. They had less need for the manual labor provided by slaves. The south, however, was an agrarian society. They relied heavily on the man power slaves offered. Their economy was based upon the cash crop (tobacco and cotton.) With out this free source of labor many believed the southern economy would collapse. A catalyst for the growth of slaves was the introduction of the cotton gin, invented by Eli Whitney. This allowed farmers to produce much more cotton by being able to refine it much faster. With the increased productivity more slaves were needed to work the fields. During this time period slavery doubled in the south.
To combat slavery, the North believed by not allowing it to expand to the new territories it would eventually die out(Northerners did not believe the constitution gave them the legal right to end it where it existed already.) Southern politicians also realized this and fiercely fought for its right to expand. Much of this came to a head during the end of the Mexican-American war, setting the stage for the civil war.
