Nutrient agar and malt agar are designed with different purposes in mind. Nutrient agar is said to be the least selective of all agars used however malt agar is designed to allow the growth of yeasts and fungi and inhibit the growth of other microbes. Malt agar is a selective media. With this in mind malt agar contains 30g/l malt extract and the pH is lowered with lactic acid to 4.5-5.5. Nutrient agar contains beef extract 3g/l and peptone 5.0g/l the pH is generally around 6.8-7.0. Both media are made with 15g/l agar powder.
