My teachers in the University told me that the difference between these two concepts deals with the environment's capability to "absorve" or "support" an agent.
In the case of contamination it could be support by the environment without stoping the general chemical cycles and life cycles. We use pollution refering to those agents or activities that produce highly damage in the environment and damage the entire ecosystem drastically.
