The two words sometimes have the same meaning therefore they are called homonyms.

But there is a difference that you can't use "sort of" in a sense that you like something more or as a negation to something.

Ex.

"I like this color rather then that one."

"Would you rather go by a car or bicycle?"

But in other uses they have the same meaning.

Ex.

"The building was rather large"

"The building was sort of large"
