Anytime you see a yellow line on the road it means that the two lanes are for driving in opposite directions; a white line always means the two lanes being divided are for traffic moving in the same direction; broken lines on the road, regardless of the color mean it is ok and legal to pass another vehicle by moving into the other lane, passing the vehicle, and then returning to your original lane.

(In the US) the white line indicates that traffic in the adjacent lane flows in the same direction as your lane, while the yellow line denotes that it flows in the opposite direction. The line being dashed means that passing/changing lanes is allowed in that area.

If the solid line is on your side, it means no passing. If the broken line is on your side, it means passing is OK (but be careful).

They mean the same thing - do not cross the line.

The yellow divides opposing lanes of travel, the white seperates lanes of traffic moving in the same direction.

Can you park on a grass verge when the road has double yellow lines on it?

The yellow lines refer to parking controls on UK roads. When double yellow lines are in force, you can't. (note that double yellow lines are not always operational at all times. The restriction prevents parking on or adjacent to double yellow lines. There is no mention in the regulations about which side of the yellow lines and therefore they are effective for vehicles parked on pavements or verges. Look at the Highway code text next to the pictures of double yellow lines in the Road Markings section.

What is black line between two solid yellow lines for?

it isn't a specific line, it is the road. it doesn't do anything except to provide space in between the two solid yellow lines.Added: In some cases there IS an identifiable black line between the two solid lines - what that is, is where the highway department has painted out the old previous line markings and replaced/repainted the road with the new visible ones (e.g.: perhaps changed the markings from a 'passing' zone to a 'no-passing' zone).
