A spark plug actually sparks, and is generally only used in a gasoline engine. A glow plug just gets warm (glows), and is used in some diesel engines.
The difference between spark plugs and glow plugs is that a spark plug delivers current from an ignition system to the combustion chamber while a glow plug is a heating device that aids starting diesel engines.
