The English reformation was state led, originally anyhow! It had very little support from the English people or Church initially. It made no real changes to the Church only abolishing some few medieval intrusions or additions to the faith! It also returned the Anglican Church, the Church in England, back to its roots in the catholicity of the first thousand years before the split between east and west!

Anglican Catholic Answer!

The English reformation started with Dynastic quarrels for the Tudor dynasty. When the pope was unable to procure an annulment for Henry, the king sulked!

It was not religion that prevented Henry's annulment, just bad luck. Katherine of Aragon's nephew, the Emperor of Germany, held the pope prisoner in Rome. He didn't want his aunt to be abandoned by a lecherous King!

In return, Henry took sides in a quarrel within the Catholic Church, concerning the authority of the Pope. This had been going on for some hundreds of years, who held authority, the Bishop of Rome, or the Bishops in Council? The Orthodox Church said the Council had authority and Henry supported them! This caused the papacy to split with him!

The Protestant Reformations were attempts by enormously talented individuals to set up their own churches in an attempt to combat papal negligence!

The ,'Counter Reformation,' misnamed the ,'Catholic ,' one was an attempt by the Papacy to win back the losses of the last years, not by rectifying the mistakes, but by retrenching . By coercion and by putting the Roman Church on a sounder footing at the Council of Trent. Here it strengthened the papacy and with the help of recalcitrant bishops made the papacy stronger though at the cost of reducing the Roman Church to a Sect!
