The Yellow River (Huang He) flows through northern China. It is the shorter of the two and is extremely muddy due to the dry areas it flows through. It flows past Baotou, Zhengzhou, and Jinan and enters the Yellow Sea in Shandong Province. The Hunag He is considered to be the cradle of Chinese civilization, and is known for its catastrophic floods.
The Yangtze (Chiang Jiang) flows through central China. It is the longer and much larger of the two, and starts in the rugged Tibetan Plateau before winding its way through scenic gorges like the Leaping Tiger Gorge. it then goes through rich farmland past cities like Chongqing, Nanjing, and Shanghai before dumping into the East China Sea. It is considered the "heart" of modern China.
