What is the difference between the role of the physician and the barber-surgeon in history?

The main difference was that Physicians seem to have specialised in the theoretical elements of Medicine, and diagnosis, whereas surgeons specialised in the treatment of wounds etc.
However, surgeons and barber-surgeons often seem to be confused and conflated bu they were not the same- at least not after the 13th century.
Barber surgeons offered 'services' like bloodletting but were often untrained and unskilled amateurs, whereas real surgeons studied went through years of rigorous University Training, and seemed to have looked down on barber surgeons with a measure of contempt.
