In some (but not all) vehicles, the tail and brake light are part of one globe, generally, a 12v 21/5W globe. The tail light comes on when the parklights and/or headlights are on, and the brake light will come on when the foot is applied to the brake pedal.

The one globe has 2 filaments and the pin for the globe is offset (the base also has 2 x contacts).

On vehicles such as trailers, the brake and tail globes are generally separate (2 x festoon globes) each with differing wattages. Hope that helps! Lindalegend from Tassie.
