Thoroughpin and bog spavin look quite similar, because they are both a swelling in the hock area.
The joint of the hock contains pockets of fluid (called synovial fluid) to help the bones move across one another. The pockets can become over-full with synovial fluid, and make the pockets poke out and make the hock look puffy. This is bog spavin, or serous tarsitis. Although bog spavin doesn't hurt the horse, it can make them more prone to Arthritis later in life.
A tendon runs down the back of a horse's leg called the deep digital flexor tendon. At the level of the hock, it's surrounded by a sheath (the tarsal sheath) that's also filled with synovial fluid, so the tendon can glide over the bones of the hock. If the area is damaged, the sheath can become inflamed and filled with extra synovial fluid. It looks like to puffy pockets on the inside and outside of the horse's leg, just above the hock. It's called thoroughpin, or tenosynovitis.
