An object rotates on it's axis (Spins) - Day

An object revolves around another object (Orbit) - Year

So for the Earth. A day is the time it takes the Earth to rotate once in it's axis - a day,

whereas it takes a year to revolve around the Sun.

Rotation would just be an object spinning on its own, whereas revolution means that

an object is going around another object.

-- The Basketball rotates rapidly on the end of the player's finger when he's showing off.

-- The roulette ball revolves around the center of the roulette wheel.

Rotation is difference with revolution because rotation is like the planets spin on an axis. And revolution is like the planet revole around the sun.

This sounds like you are trying to cheat on homework, but I will help anyway.

A rotation is when a body, usually planets, rotates around an axis at its center. So it is spinning, basically. In a revolution, a body goes in circles, usually around a center of mass that is not part of itself.

Try this explanation:

-- Michael Jordan is riding on a carousel (merry-go-round), and at the same time,

he's absent-mindedly spinning a Basketball on the end of his finger.

-- The basketball is rotating on the end of Michael's finger. (rotation)

-- At the same time, Michael and the basketball are both revolving around the

music box at the center of the carousel. (revolution)

Rotation: Something moves around its axis. Example: Earth rotates around its axis once every day.

Revolution: Something moves around another object. Example: The Moon revolves around the Earth.

Astronomers use these terms in this way :

Rotation period is the time for something, like a planet, to spin once.

Period of revolution is used for the time a moon, planet, etc. takes to

complete an orbit around another object eg. the Earth's orbit around

the Sun.

Period of revolution is usually the time taken for a planet to complete 1 orbit of a star, however in binary star systems (i.e. two stars orbiting each other) I guess a star could have a period of revolution too.

We generally think of the period of rotation (rotation period) as the amount of time it takes for a rotating body to make one complete revolution about its axis. For earth, it's aboutone day. Simple and easy. But there's a catch. There always is. Let's look. The period of rotation for the earth would notbe the amount of time it takes for the earth to rotate from exactly high noon at a given spot one day until exactly high noon at that same spot the next day. The reason for this is that high noon is the rotation of the earth relative to the sun. When we talk about period of rotation of the earth, we're talking about the amount of time it takes to make one complete rotation relative to a "fixed point" way, way out in space (the background stars). There will be a slight time difference between the high-noon-to-high-noon rotation and one that uses a distant star as a reference. The latter is the way we measure period of rotation. Just so you know. Need a link? You got it. Look below.

rotations cause day and night or the spinning of earth which pretaining to a distant star will take exactly 23 hours and 56 minutes. while revolutions is the long track around the sun that takes 1 year to complete
