In 1955 Harley added the model FLH Super Sport. The FLH has polished and flowed intake ports and has 8:1 compression. In 1955 the FL had 7.25:1 compression. (Prior to 1955 the compression in the FL was 7:1.) The letter H = High Compression.
The FLH had a higher compression ratio and hence more power than the FL. The FLH can be identified by having 7 cooling fins cast into the head to disipate the additional heat generated by the increased compression.

Harley's alphabet soup can be a little confusing sometimes. FLH refers to a bike that has floorboards and a handlebar mounted fairing/windshield. This particular group of letters would be followed by a T for Touring or an R for Road King. FL means it has floorboards, just as in the FL softails, i.e. the Fatboy, Heritage and the Deluxe, they all have floorboards while the FX softails and the dynas all have footpegs which is what FX means.
