To the untrained eye they may look the same. To ride it is a huge difference. Hunter is a classic style of riding over fences. The fences are not as high as a Jumper course. The judge is looking for a beautiful, even ride. Horses must be groomed well with braided mane, spotless tack and hooves polished. Riders must be turned out to look at least as good as their horse. Classic, understated colors in hat, hunt coat, and breeches. Boots must be clean and shined. The style over fences must flow, with no speeding up or slowing down, an even cadence from the beginning circle until the ending circle. The horse must have neatly tucked legs over the fences. The horse should not drop one knee lower than the other. The horse must execute flying changes smoothly. Or better, to come down on the correct lead off the fences.

Jumping is a timed event. The horse that does the course of jumps in the least amount of time with the least amount of faults wins. A fault is a fence refusal, a rail knock-down, off course (jumps out of order), and of course if the rider falls off. Most top riders rode Hunters as junior riders. They ride correctly and are ready for bigger jumps at faster speeds. Jumpers fences are usually higher and the courses are more challenging for horse and rider. Add fact:If the horse refuses a jump it's a fault the first and second time. Third time disqualifies horse and rider and they are excused from the arena.

Jumpers focuses more on which rider can complete the course fastest with the least mistakes, whereas hunter works more on posture, control, and appearance.

If a hunter makes a mistake like getting ahead or behind the horse, but doesn't knock down the bar they'll still be penalized. If they take the jump perfectly, but the horse still knocks down a bar, they may not be penalized (as much). These things usually aren't considered for jumpers.

I would say hunter is more difficult because it requires you to be more aware of yourself and your horse. You can get penalized whether or not you knock down a pole, so you have to be prepared for more than making it over jumps.

hunter jumper is... well, hunter jumper. you are wearing the traditional brown tack, the hunt clothes, and going over jumps of different heights and in a certain pattern.

In dressage, you are wearing traditional white and black--white breeches, white shirt, black tall boots, black jacket, and a white stock tie. and of course the black tack. if you are below level four dressage, you wear a snaffle, but above level four you can have a double bridle if you want. dressage and hunter are similar in the sense it is still a pattern, and you are still alone in the ring, but dressage is different because it was traditionally a military thing for the cavalry, in saluting the officers, but now instead of officers, you are honoring the judges that are judging you. ;)

What if your help Please Dressage Riders I am leasing a Belgian mare and she is only green broke i might finish her training in dressage but i am a jumper so should i switch to dressage for her?

If you are leasing a Belgian mare and she is only green broke, it would be best to finish her training in dressage if she was started in dressage. If you are primarily a jumper, you would do better with an expert to help finish her in dressage before confusing her with jumping. A Belgian is a heavy horse and jumping can cause quite a bit of strain to the tendons and bones of the legs, especially if she is close to two thousand pounds. Dressage riders tend to place less strain on the horse. If you do switch to dressage, make sure to train with an expert.

What is the difference between a hunt saddle and a dressage saddle?

There's no such thing as a show saddle, unless you mean a saddle you use exclusively for shows. A dressage saddle has a very deep seat to help the rider sit and a long, straight saddle flap to accommodate the longer leg position. The girth straps are also quite long so that the short dressage girth does not hinder the leg laying flat. Typically the saddles used in hunter/jumper shows are of medium depth with a more forward cut flap.

What is horse jumping over fence called?

It's just called jumping. The Jumping shows are called Show Jumping, and then Hunter-Jumper. From what I have heard, Show Jumping is based on speed and focuses more on the horse than the rider. Hunter-Jumper is about the rider.
