The U.S. Political system nominates leaders based on elections, and candidates for these elections are supported by parties. The main two parties are the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. Other parties, such as the Green Party, also put candidates up for election, although they don't have as much support as the main too.

The most important one is that the majority party in in the UK Parliament always gets to form the Government. In the UK you cannot have a situation like the US where the Republicans have a majority in Congress and the Democrats form the Government. Ministers in the UK are always chosen from amongst the Parliament (and majority Party) members, and they remain at the same time members of the Government and members of Parliament. In the US, ministers can be picked from anywhere and can even be members of the opposite Party. In the US, you cannot be a member of Government andParliament (Congress) at the same time like in the UK.

Within the Party systems, things aren't much different. Both sides have a district-based power structure and a Party leadership that influences who will represent a given district. Only British Parties maintain a much stricter Party and voting discipline. British parties even have a special 'disciplinarian' amongst their members of Parliament, called the Chief Whip. Both in England and the US, only leadership contests are not subject to that discipline and may produce unexpected or even 'outsider' results, like Trump for the Republicans and Boris Johnson for the Conservatives.

Finally, the British Prime Minister is also the formal leader of his Party and takes that job very seriously. In the US, the President will of course be a member, but rarely the formal 'leader' of either the Democrats or the Republicans. Even his actual influence with his Party's leadership will vary much, mostly depending on his popularity and personality, but not based on any formal power.
