The difference is Saltwater Fish tend to live in environments where there is salt available in the water (oceans) and freshwater fish live in environments that lack in salt(rivers, ponds, streams).
There are also a number of biological and physiological differences relating to water and salt retention and excretion.
The same as in the ocean
Because saltwater fish can only breathe in saltwater (as in the ocean) and freshwater fish can only breathe in freshwater (as in tap water.)
Freshwater fish derive small amounts of salt from their freshwater habitat. If you place a freshwater fish in saltwater, the difference in habitat will cause the fish to burst.
There are freshwater drum, and saltwater drum species.

Certain freshwater fish can survive saltwater conditions; examples are black mollies, mono's and scats. All of these fish aren't truly freshwater or saltwater, they are Brackish. Brackish is between freshwater and saltwater, and so these fish are highly adaptable.
