Split rings are in AC generators ( alternating current) while slip rings are in DC current (direct current).
Slip rings are used in AC while split rings are used in DC generators
slip ring is connect on shaft of motor to collect current from commutator without any complicate connection and with use of it resistors can be insert in circuit and therefore speed control of motor can easily achive
If the synchronous motor is single phase then there are two slip rings & if this motor is three phase so the slip rings are three in number. Correction; I have never seen a single phase synchronous motor. It would cost more that it was worth. A synchronous motor has a separately excited field. If the excitation comes from a stationary DC source it has 2 slip (collector) rings. A brushless induction motor has no slip rings because the exciter armature rotates and so do the rectifiers. A permanent magnet motor, used with variable frequency drives, is another type of synchronous motor that has no slip rings. A three phase motor with 3 slip rings is a Wound Rotor motor. Wound rotor motors are variable speed motors that were used for such applications as bridges and cranes before variable speed drives.
slip rings
Slip rings provide a means for connecting the rotating armature of a simple a.c. generator to an external circuit. As the armature naturally produces an alternating voltage, an alternating voltages is what appears across the slip rings. To obtain a d.c. voltage, it's necessary to reverse the direction of the natural alternating voltage every half cycle, producing full wave rectification. This is achieved using a split-ring commutator which, essentially, is a rotating switch. So, slip rings are used with simple a.c. generators, whereas a commutator is used with d.c. generators.Having said that, however, large modern a.c. generators (alternators) have fixed armatures, and rotating fields, and slip rings are used to supply d.c. field current to the alternator's rotating field windings.
Slip rings are used in AC while split rings are used in DC generators
The split rings cause the direction of the magnetic field in the armature to change direction as the motor rotates. If this didn't happen the motor would not rotate. Slip rings can be used for an AC motor which causes the direction of the magnetic field to change with the AC waveform.
Slip rings offer a means of connecting a rotating winding to an external circuit. Slip rings are used when an a.c. output is desired.
This is the standard answer for both split ring commutator and slip ring. A split ring commutator is to reverse the current direction through an armature every half turn A slip ring is to ensure that the current continue to flow to the external circuit Last bit of additional information. Carbon brush ensure that the slip ring are in contact with the circuit containing the external load *Note: Do not get confused with split ring commutator(d.c.generator) & slip ring(a.c. generator)
The only difference between slip rings and commutator is that commutator can change the frequency where as the slip rings can not do it.
Electrical slip rings can be purchased from a number of online sources. Some of these stores, include Mercotac (www.mercotac.com) and Lucas Alternator slip rings (at www.tradekey.com).
Gently squeeze them back and forth until they break and use new ones. They make plastic compression rings that don't dig in, but I don't like them as they can slip or split.

Slip rings are needed to connect a rotating armature to external fixed circuits.
To facilitate the conveyance of electrical current and/or signals between the static and rotating parts of a device.
Electrical slip rings are available from Sibley.com and Mercotac.com. You can also find them at local electrical supply stores.
Hydraulic slip rings are similar to electrical slip rings and transmit fluid power from a stationary source to rotating parts. The hydraulic slip rings are also known as Fluid Rotary Unions (FRU). Fluid pressure is connected from a stationary tube (the stator) to the rotating parts through either single or multi-ported rotating component (rotor) of the slip ring. Multiple application combined slip rings are also wide used to transport not only hydraulic power but also electrical as well as communication cables through a combined slip ring.
