A kingdom is ruled solely by monarchy, a government in which the oldest or most capable male member in a certain ruling family are called king, the man with complete power over the kingdom. When that family member passes away, his son or the male family member with closest relation becomes king. If there are no male members or the only male members are too young to rule, either the queen, the kings wife, or a council will rule.

A republic is a government where officials are elected to represent the people. These officials are chosen by voting from the citizens of the country. The officials then vote on laws to pass and decisions to make. One of these officials is further voted on to be leader of the country, ( president or chancellor etc.) he has the power to turn down laws voted on, and makes important decisisons, but he does not have absolute power, like the king. After a period of time, a new official is elected to be leader, and so on.
