Winds are categorised according to the direction from which they blow - so a Northerly over NZ blows from the tropics towards the south and is usually a warmer air flow, while a southerly, blowing from Antarctica, would be chilly.

Westerly winds over NZ are the prevailing winds, that is, they blow from that direction most often. Westerlies blow from Australia, across the Tasman Sea and approach NZ along its West Coast.
