The disease is actually "SCID" which is an acronym for severe combined immunodeficiency disease, and is an illness that causes children to be born without a fully functioning immune system. B-cells and T-cells which are white blood cells involved in recognition and specific response towards pathogens are unable to perform their role sufficiently. Without an adequate immune system, illnesses like the common cold can prove life threatening. Often the child must be kept in a 'bubble'- a controlled environment to prevent them getting ill. Various treatments have been trialled for this disease, including gene therapy where a deactivated virus has the missing "immunity-DNA" inserted in it and is then used to infect the patient. Although this was successful for 9 patients in the trial, 2 developed leukaemia.
