The distance across Australia from east to west is almost 4,000 kilometers, or 2,485 miles. If the territories from Heard and McDonald Islands are included and then to the peak of the Cape Peninsula, it would be a distance of about 7,700 kilometers.

There are a number of answers to this question.

If one travelled via the capital cities (not including Hobart on the island of Tasmania), the distance would be as follows: Brisbane to Darwin, via Townsville - 3,896km; Darwin to Perth - 4178km; Perth to Adelaide to Melbourne - 3426km; Melbourne to Sydney to Brisbane - 1975km. Total = 13,488km.

If one travelled via Highway 1, the road that continues all the way around Australia, the distance is 14,523km.

On the other hand, if one were to travel by sea, the answer would be much further, as Australia's coastline is 35,877 km in length (excluding islands).

According to the Australian Government's GeoScience website, Australia's coastline is 35,877 km in length. Naturally, travelling by sea would add many kilometres to this, as one would need to stay in deeper water, away fron the continental shelf.
