It's between 4 and 4.5 miles (6.4 to 7.2 kilometers), as the crow flies (meaning, if you were to draw a straight, imaginary line between them on the map). It's about 4.25 to 4.33 miles (6.8 to 7.0 kilometers) to the southern edge of the Upper East Side (59th Street).

The Upper East Side is one of the biggest neighborhoods (it and the Upper West Side are probably the biggest). It is nearly two miles long, and about two miles wide (some of the other neighborhoods, especially in Mid to Lower Manhattan, are only a few blocks wide/long)!

The Upper East Side runs south to north from 59th to 96th Streets, and east to west from 5th Avenue to the East River (it's one of the few neighborhoods in New York City that has very precise boundaries). In New York City, 17 to 20 street blocks (north/south blocks) equals a mile, and 5 to 10 avenue blocks (east/west blocks) equals a mile (the avenue blocks vary in length considerably, but the avenue blocks on the Upper East Side are some of the shortest in the city, so in your case it would be more like 10 avenue blocks per mile).

Anyway, so, if you're going further Uptown than 59th, or very far east (like to 1st Avenue, York Avenue, or East End) the ride could be up to 6 or 6.5 miles (10 to 10.5 kilometers).

In bad traffic, it could take over an hour to get there. If there's no traffic at all, it would be about 30 minutes.

Which is better Central Park East or West?

There is actually no such thing as Central Park East. The portion of 59th Street that borders the park is called Central Park South, the portion of 110th Street that borders the park is called Central Park North, and the portion of 8th Avenue that borders the park is called Central Park West. But for some reason, the portion of 5th Avenue that borders the park is not called Central Park East. As for which is "better," it really depends on how you define "better." The Upper East Side (especially 5th, Madison and Park Avenues) has always been the richest neighborhood in New York City. But in the last 30 years, the Upper West Side has become quite gentrified, and now rent and condo prices are comparable to those of the Upper East Side. Central Park West has become the 5th Avenue of the West Side, meaning, the apartments there are the most expensive (this is mostly because of the magnificent views of Central Park). But because the Upper East Side has such a long history of being home to the richest and most powerful New Yorkers, it is still widely regarded as the city's most glamorous and upscale neighborhood. Living on the Upper East Side is a status symbol to the super-elite. Other definitions of better -- besides wealth -- can be a lot more subjective.
