The word "dizi" is not an acronym for a business or something similar. Instead, a dizi is defined as a type of Chinese flute that is commonly used in traditional Chinese music.

The Flute originated in the Orient, with instruments such as Chinese wooden flutes, such as the dizi. These were just barrels of wood with 6-8 fingering holes drilled out. Although these flutes were quite similar to the modern flute, they were in many ways unevolved. One of the major problems with the wood flute was that the notes were not consistently on tune, and there was not a true quarter tone scale. This was notice by William Boehm, a European flautist. He then made it his mission to innovate the instrument that had captivated the hearts of many Europeans, and make the flute worthy of orchestral settings. Through several trials and calculations, Boehm was able to create a metal flute, similar to the flutes being produced today. He used a system of rods connecting the keys and employed keys to close the holes rather than the finger being placed directly onto the hole. Even today, his model is being innovated. Modern inventions such as the gizmo key, the Brogger system, and the Kingma System by Brannen are changing the way we view flutes.
