What makes up the continents and the ocean floor?

The continental and oceanic plates are primarily igneous rock. The continental crust is granitic and the oceanic crust is basaltic.

What are the primary rock types that make up ocean and continental crust?

Basalts and granites.

What are the two types of crust and which rocks make up each crust?

there are two types of crust such as the oceanic crust and the continental crust, the oceanic crust is thinner and more dense than the continental crust and is constantly being recycled via subduction upon collisions with Continental crust, and creating at mid-ocean ridges. x

Why is the oldest rock at the bottom of the ocean?

The oldest rock is found in the continental crust. The youngest rock is found in the oceanic crust. This is because the ocean floor is recycled every 160 million years or so in the process of plate tectonics.

What is the continental crust made out of?

continental crust is made of many rocks such as granite

What is the compition for the crust?

Crust is made up of mainly granite, a felsic rock wit a lower density than basalt, what makes up the ocean's crust, thus why the continental crust rises up compared to ocean crust.

The Earth's crust includes ocean floors and?

The Earth's crust includes oceanic and continental categories, the oceanic crust composed of basalt rock and recycled in roughly 150 million year intervals by lithospheric plate movements, and the older less dense continental crust, composed of granitic rock.

How do continental crust differ from oceanic?

Continental crust is predominantly composed mostly of rock of a granitic composition, higher in silica and aluminum, with layers of sedimentary rock above. Oceanic crust is predominantly basaltic (higher in iron and magnesium), darker, thinner, more dense, and formed from rapid cooling of lava.

How are Ocean floor rocks are different from continental rocks?

Oceanic crust is composed primarily of the dense volcanic rock basalt. Continental crust is composed primarily of the intrusive igneous rock granite, less dense than basalt.

What is the earth's crust the outer lighter portion of?

The earth's crust is the outer lighter portion of the continental crust. The crust beneath the ocean iscomosed of heavy, dark volcanic rock. The continental crust is composed mostly of lighter rocks rich in silica such as granite.

What is the composition of ocean crust?

It is mostly composed of basalt, and few other mineral types. It is made mostly of igneous rock, same with continental crust.

What is part of molten rock at mid-ocean ridges?

Molten rock at mid-ocean ridges is the result of sea-floor spreading. WRONG
