The US Mint did not produce this coin and it is probably the product of one of the private mints. Its actual value would be limited to the worth of the metals it contains.
What is it worth
Double eagle commemorative 200 th aniversary
This coin has a eagle on one side and a double eagle on the other. On the side with the eagle head it has written American Eagle Bicentennial 1985 and on the side with the double eagle is written double eagle commemorative with stars and 200 years It appears to have a silver base with the eagle's done in gold. It is in a clear plastic case. Any ideas of worth?
what is the value
The American Eagle Bicentennial quarter with the double eagle isn't overly valuable. In good condition, they can sell as high as $50 but no higher.
Since it is nickel "layered"with silver and gold, not nearly as much as if it were a silver coin with gold on it. E-bay is showing auctions with prices from $4 to $16.
About $2.
There's nothing called a "commerative" coin. There are COMMEMORATIVE coins, but an coin from 1985 is unlikely to commemorate any major bicentennial. Special coins were minted in 1976 for the 200th anniversary of independence, and others were minted in 1989 for the 200th anniversary of the Constitution.
$20
It appears on all denominations of the Gold Eagle coin, the gold 2015 U.S. Marshall $5 Commemorative, the 1987 gold $5 Constitution commemorative, the 1991 gold $5 Mount Rushmore commemorative. The eagle appears on many U.S. gold coins.
I have two of these coins from my father. I can't anything on them on the web. I too would like to know the value. As far as I am able to determine, this coin has no precious metal value. It is not minted by the uS Mint and is not US legal tender. It is not made of silver or gold, although it may be zinc with silver plating. Normally, the term "Double Eagle" means a $20 gold coin. The US Mint is minting commemorative gold half eagles. but not eagles and not double eagles. On this coin, "Double Eagle" is a play on words as there is an eagle that appears to be landing on a mirror, thus showing two eagles. It has novelty value only. I would estimate its value at $5 USD max. 9/9/09 There was both a gold and a silver coin issued in 1987 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the constitution. It sounds like you have the gold coin, since that is the only one with an eagle on it. It has a weight of 0.2687 troy ounces. It is composed of 90% gold, 3.6% silver and 6.4% copper. My experience is that the value fluctuates with the value of gold. You can check on EBAY to see what they have sold for recently.
You can't sell it outright but you can give it to the guy with the carboard sign on the street corner! LOL! LMAO!
The term Double Eagle is used only for $20 gold coins. This is a 1982 G.W. Commemorative Half Dollar. Unfortunately the gold plating killed the numismatic collectible value of the coin. It is now only valued for the silver it contains.
