Provided there has been no recent wet weather (which would be unusual anyway), it is a very easy drive on quite a good road from Alice Springs to Uluru. If you do not have a 4WD, it will not matter because a normal sedan is fine for the journey.

The scenery is fascinating, but you need to go into it with a positive determnination to observe as much as possible - or else you will be bored. The countryside is very flat, but the vegetation is unlike anything you may have seen before. There are some sections where you can stand just off the roadside and view some huge saltpans - whether they have water in them or not, they are quite spectacular. In places the scenery is almost other-worldly.

A little way off the road, about a third of the way along, are some meteorite craters - again, an indication of the fascinating ancient history of Australia.
